Geological Notes

Moldavite is a green tektite, a natural silicate glass created during a meteorite-impact event rather than through mineral crystallization. Its formation is associated with the Ries impact in present-day Germany approximately 14.8 million years ago. Near-surface terrestrial material was rapidly heated, melted, and ejected before cooling into separate glass bodies.

These glass bodies were distributed across parts of Central Europe, including the Moldavite-bearing deposits of South Bohemia. Burial, sedimentary transport, and prolonged chemical weathering altered their outer surfaces over time. Those processes produced the varied pits, grooves, ridges, and cavities now used to describe individual Moldavite specimens.
