Mineral Specimen Size Guide | Mystic Parcel

At Mystic Parcel, specimen sizing follows a collector-style classification system inspired by long-standing gem and mineral show competition standards, including those commonly seen in Tucson. Because there is no single universal mineralogical sizing authority, these categories are used as a practical guide for describing specimen scale consistently across our shop.

This guide is intended to help you better understand collector terminology when viewing pieces in The Curio Cabinet and other one-of-a-kind mineral offerings. As always, exact dimensions and weight are provided on each listing, but these size classes offer a useful shorthand for how a specimen is generally understood in the collecting world.

Standard Specimen Sizes

Micromount (M/M)

Specimens that require magnification to be properly viewed and appreciated. These are often collected for rarity, crystal habit, or locality significance rather than display size.

Thumbnail (TN)

Specimens that fit entirely within a 1-inch (2.5 cm) cube. Thumbnail specimens are especially loved by collectors because they can be remarkably aesthetic, high quality, and space-efficient.

Toenail

A size category between thumbnail and miniature. These specimens fit within a 1.5-inch (3.8 cm) cube and offer a little more display presence while still remaining compact.

Miniature (MIN)

Specimens that fit within a 2-inch (5 cm) cube. This is a classic collector category that balances detail, presence, and ease of display.

Small Cabinet (SMC)

Specimens larger than miniature, generally over 2 inches and up to 5 inches (13 cm) in any dimension. These pieces often have stronger sculptural presence and make beautiful personal display specimens.

Cabinet

Larger specimens where the majority of the piece is over 5 inches (13 cm), typically reaching up to about 12 inches (30 cm). Cabinet pieces are display-forward and often become focal points in a collection.

Large Cabinet / Museum (XLC)

Specimens over 12 inches (30 cm) or pieces intended for museum-scale display. These are commanding statement specimens with significant visual and collector presence.

A Note on Natural Variation

Because mineral specimens are natural formations, not manufactured objects, some pieces may sit close to the edge of a category. In those cases, Mystic Parcel assigns the size class that best reflects the specimen’s overall display scale and collector presentation. Exact dimensions listed on each product page remain the most precise reference.

How We Use This Guide

Mystic Parcel uses these specimen size classifications across our listings to describe collector scale more consistently. This helps create a clearer experience for both new collectors and seasoned mineral lovers, while honoring the traditional language of the specimen world.

If you are ever unsure how a piece may present in person, we recommend reviewing the listed dimensions, weight, and scale photography together for the clearest sense of proportion.
