Cobaltoan Calcite from Democratic Republic of the Congo

Cobaltoan Calcite is a cobalt-bearing variety of calcite known for its vivid natural pink to raspberry coloration, formed as trace cobalt entered calcite during growth in oxidized copper-cobalt deposits. Material from the Kolwezi District of the Democratic Republic of Congo is especially valued for its saturated color and diverse crystal habits, including druzy coatings, botryoidal forms, rhombohedral crystals, and scalenohedral “dogtooth” growths. This specimen reflects the mineral richness of the Katanga Copper Crescent, where copper, cobalt, carbonate minerals, and associated species occur together in complex geological environments.
