Geological Notes

Moldavite is a green variety of tektite, a natural silicate glass produced by an impact rather than a crystalline mineral. The accepted formation model connects Moldavite to the Ries impact in present-day Germany approximately 14.75 million years ago. Near-surface terrestrial material was rapidly heated, melted, ejected, and cooled into glass during the event.

The resulting glass bodies were dispersed across the Central European Moldavite strewn field, including deposits in the southern Czech Republic. Some pieces were later transported and redeposited within sedimentary layers, where they remained until recovered. This sedimentary history forms part of the collector context for South Bohemian Moldavite.

The specimen’s ellipsoid outline may preserve part of its original molten-droplet form, later modified by transport and weathering. Moldavite surface sculpture develops through natural etching and abrasion during burial and sedimentary movement.
