Like traditional obsidian, Velvet Rainbow Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools so quickly that an orderly crystal structure cannot develop. The unique “velvety” sheen comes from millions of microscopic mineral or gas inclusions that scatter light into soft, glowing color shifts. These inclusions may become distributed through subtle flow layers as the molten material moves and cools, creating the bands of green, gold, blue, pink, and other colors that appear when the polished surface is viewed from different angles.
